Alpha2EQ provides the highest level of concentration of α2M in plasma available on the market today — up to five times more than naturally occurring levels. Osteoarthritis (OA) can affect any horse at any age, and 60% of all equine lameness is related to osteoarthritis (USDA 2000, Caron 2003). OA is often associated with poor performance, early retirement, and a significant financial burden for owners of affected athletes (McIlwraith 2012).

The single-treatment, concentrated power of Alpha2EQ relieves lameness, inflammation and joint pain often for up to one year. However, there are several mitigating factors to the efficacy of the therapy, including the horse’s metabolism and the severity of the horse’s joint disease.

Risks may be considered inherent with any procedure or injection to a joint with any substance. However, there are no side effects to the orthobiologic procedure or Alpha-2 Macroglobulin (α2M) when administered into a joint. Unlike steroid injection, there are no known long-term risks of Alpha2EQ therapy. It is also safe to use in joints that have previously been injected with other biologics or steroids.

Glad you asked! Our name, Astaria, is pronounced “as-tar-ree-a” and is derived from a mash-up of the word “astra”, from the Latin etymology meaning “journey to the stars” and combined with the Latin “aria” meaning orchestral accompaniment. Thus, the name comes to mean “coming together in pursuit of something greater.” The journey of science led us to an amazing discovery that we are excited to share with the equine and companion animal lovers all over the world.
